GLEAM APPAREL: THE ONLINE “FASHION STORE” GIANT!
Miss Bunmi Ajayi Temitope is a resilient, hardworking woman and the CEO of Gleam Apparels.
Gleam apparel is an online store she started after school. She started from nothing literally, and has grown her business to over 4,000 customer base on instagram.
DA: What inspired you to start up gleam apparel?
Bunmi: I always loved fashion since I was in the university. When I was through with school, I decided to start making money from my passion, which was what inspired me to start up my own online store.
DA: When you decided to start up, what were the steps you took?
Bunmi: When I finally decided that I wanted to startup, I sent a message to a friend that I patronized once, she offers wholesale packages. The next step I took was to open a page for female wears online. Whenever a customer pays for an item, I simply order from her.
DA: How were you able to raise funds and how much did you start with?
Bunmi: When I started, I was literally broke! I just finished university without any prior knowledge on how to plan my life after school. I started with no money at all. To be able to subscribe my phone, I would offer to cook for my neighbor and save from the tips I get, which I eventually use to subscribe my phone.
DA: How do you get goods from other countries and how long does it take to arrive?
Bunmi: I order for goods via a website. It takes 2/3 weeks sometimes.
DA: What are your most reliable transport/ courier companies?
Bunmi: Blaze logistics, Funsho logistics(for Lagos delivery). For inter-state deliveries (Peace Mass Transit, God is Good motors and The Young shall grow motors)
DA: What challenges have you faced and how did you overcome them?
Bunmi: Online store can be frustrating!
Customers not knowing their exact sizes
Not stating uk/us sizes perfectly.
Expecting to get their goods within 3 hours of order
Convincing a customer that your page is legit
Convincing a customer reasons why you don’t offer payment before delivery.
Competition on social media is high for online sellers.
Customers thinking a particular dress come with the models body.
DA: What is your advice to those who want to start up their own online stores?
Bunmi: Be real, be honest. Integrity is key. Customer service is equally key. Don’t react rudely to angry customers. Work hard. Think of ways to improve your page and attract more customers! Remember social media is very competitive
