DO ALL YOU CAN TO IMPROVE YOUR SKILLS – COMEDIAN, ACTOR – SEYI BROWN
Mr. Seyi Brown is an actor, a comedian and a Master of Ceremony. He is definitely an embodiment of talent in the Nigerian Entertainment industry, and his works have spread across the borders of this country.
He featured in the Movies; International Affairs, and Night to laugh, alongside other great actors and actresses. In October 2018, he held one of the biggest concerts ‘Live in Charlotte’ with BOVI, and is set to host ‘Tope Alabi and friends, live in concert’, this March, in Toronto, Canada.
He is a Family man, blessed with two lovely daughters. He has definitely come a long way in the entertainment industry and shares his great story with us.
DA: What inspired you to venture into the entertainment industry?
Mr. Seyi Brown: I grew up in a household filled with laughter, my dad who was a clergy was very hilarious and I most definitely inherited his sense of humor.
DA: When you discovered your talents, what steps did you take?
Mr. Seyi Brown: Instinct told me to reach out to Alibaba. I did when I saw him at a Sheraton event in Lagos, and to my surprise, he said I should come and see him. I was too afraid to go, so I understudied him by watching his clips then other comedians like Eddie Murphy, jammie foxx, Chris rock, and a host of others.
DA: When did you receive a major breakthrough in your career?
Mr. Seyi Brown: Major breakthrough came through THE LAGOS LOTTERY TV GAME SHOW and DOCTOR’s QUARTERS.
DA: Did you have to undergo any special training to become a great show host and MC? Or was it majorly self development?
Mr. Seyi Brown: Like I said earlier, I understudied Alibaba, Basorge, Julius Agwu, Okey bakasi, from at a distance and learnt on the job. TV hosting came natural but I had to do a lot of self development, majorly by practicing in front of the mirror.
DA: How were you able to create a brand from your talent, and what specific steps did you take?
Mr. Seyi Brown: My career choice really helped. I started entertainment via modeling, runway and commercial modeling, so my first TV gig was a makeover TV show called STYLE QUEST which paved the way for me.
Also I tend not to do my stand up in Pidgin English. So I cater to a specific clientele though I can reach across the board to pidgin audiences but I am comfortable doing my routine in English.
DA: Social media is a great marketing tool for small businesses. How were you able to use it as leverage and not a distraction?
Mr. Seyi Brown: I am still learning on the job. I am more active on Facebook, but someone introduced me to IG and so far it’s been a great tool.
DA: What do you do to improve yourself daily and stay ahead in the industry?
Mr. Seyi Brown: Never stop learning.
- To stay relevant you have to be current. Do researches; listen to the news, current affairs, social, political/economic issues.
- Read, go out, socialize, network.
DA: What is your advice to young entrepreneurs in the entertainment industry? Especially on how to get their work out there?
Mr. Seyi Brown: Like Teju baby face teaches; you need a mentor/role model
Attend seminars/courses to improve your skills. As we speak I am taking acting classes. Do all you can to improve your skills so when the opportunity comes, you kill every show.
Similarly, to get your work out there, make optimal use of Instagram Platform, You can start with making 30 seconds clips and consistency is key!
