DA: What inspired you to venture into photography?
Ayo Folayan: Firstly I will say photography is an art (diverse range of human activities in creating visuals or artworks intended to be appreciated for their beauty. so my goal of creating beautiful moments and my love for pictures/art inspired me.
DA: When did you discover your talent in photography?
Ayo Folayan: It began to really surface last year.
DA: How did you start?
Ayo Folayan: After seeing series of images created by a friend Saifullahi Mohammed with just his iPhone, I was inspired and started with my HTC M9+ and also my iPad. Later I got my first camera; this helped me to learn the basics of digital photography (i.e the exposure triangle). I learnt a lot by myself by watching Youtube video tutorials and am still learning from professionals in the business for example Akin Oyebode, Ola Folayan and some friends, I will say “YouTube is a school” because I have learnt a lot from it.
DA: How did you get your first camera?
Ayo Folayan: I got my first camera from my savings.
DA: What challenges have you faced so far?
Ayo Folayan: I have faced so many challenges which are unavoidable as a starter. The first challenge anyone who is trying to be a photographer will ever face is the cost of getting a camera because an averagely good quality dslr is quite expensive to get.
Also my clients sometimes just want free work but u need to let them know free works won’t pay the bills. Because if I don’t get paid or I am underpaid, how will I pay for my camera repairs and other expenses?
DA: How did you overcome them?
Ayo Folayan: I will say through patience and sacrifice. About the cost of the camera and its equipment, sometimes I just overlook the cost and buy them if I have the money because I know they are all investments since I am not buying them to take free pictures so I will definitely make my money back. I will say “you have to spend money to make more money”.
Also self-confidence in the aspect of billing my clients, Just tell them your price, you don’t have to undervalue yourself because you want to get paid , the clients that know the worth of photography will find you and will even pay more.
DA: Who are your mentors in photography?
Ayo Folayan: Akin Oyebode photography, Reo Studios, Ola Folayan, AMAZING KLEF, Prince Meyson
DA: What is your greatest achievement so far?
Ayo Folayan: Shooting Images for MADEWEI NIGERIA LIMITED for his website. I also created his company’s logo.
DA: What are the first five crucial steps to take for someone in venturing into photography?

Learn the basics of digital photography.
Take pictures of everything around you.
Don’t give up if you take bad pictures. Just keep shooting and Learn from your previous mistakes.
DA: With low fund and no camera, how do I start?
Ayo Folayan: You can start with a mobile phone, now that we have mobile phones that works like digital cameras, but that doesn’t mean you should get a mobile phone if you have the money for a camera, you can also rent or borrow from friends before you are able to get for yourself.
