DA: what inspired you to venture into makeup artistry?
VUGO: my love for colours, and I have great interest in most things that pertain to female beautification, ranging from hair, skin, makeup, clothes e.t.c.
Therefore, realising what I loved and what was really good at, paved way for my career choice.
DA: when you decided to start up what steps did you take?
VUGO: Initially, I didn’t start up as a makeup artist, I started up as a model instructor, I train ladies in modelling, catwalk, and I equally train them on etiquette. I got interested in makeup, close to my final year in school, I noticed that I had to leave the costume and catwalk circle.
I knew it had to be makeup artistry because I used to be an artist, I used to draw, so I decided to transform the talent of fine art and develop myself into becoming a makeup artist.
DA: How were you able to get your first makeup tools?
VUGO: when I was in school, I had some aboki products (i.e not original) and a brush set which I was just managing at that time. When I was going for my youth service, my mother got me my first professional makeup kit (complete makeup products and a makeup box) as a gift, because she realised that I had developed interest in it and she wanted to boost my dreams.
DA: What do you do to improve your skills daily?
VUGO: To improve myself daily, I read a lot, I research online, I equally check the works of my other colleagues in the industry, I go to their social media pages, I check their works, I notice what trends are changing, I also check out the works of international makeup artists.
Generally, there is nothing much changing in the industry, especially over the past four to five years, just few modifications, for example, those days they had darker and thicker brows, now we have faint and slim brows.
DA: When was the turning point in your career?
VUGO: I have had many turning points in my career, but the first turning point was when I got a job at MYTV Africa, as their official makeup artist, then I was still serving (NYSC) and I was in dance and drama CDS group.
DA: What is your advertisement and publicity strategy?
VUGO: Apart from instagram and whatasapp, another strategy I use is to get models that have more followers on their instagram page.
I also work with popular photographers, designers and stylists. So I just make sure that they have a lot of fan base, so when they post the pictures, a lot of people will get to see it.
DA: What is your advice to young aspiring makeup artists?
VUGO: first of all, you have to be humble, in this industry, most people feel that they have arrived and therefore tend to be pompous.
I used to be like that when I was in school, then I realised that life is much more than that, you have to be ready you learn, always ask questions, smile a lot, try to control your anger, because some clients can frustrate you, be truthful, be honest, and have a fixed price. Do not compromise your standards for anyone. Never!
DA: How can we reach you?
VUGO: Through my instagram @VUGO24 or my whatsapp number 07012921698
